Updated January 30, 2009: The new, multi-story down-town RSA building is on the list for funding from the State Community College Facilities Department and will be included in the next statewide higher education bond that is placed on the ballot. We believe that will most likely occur in 2010, which means that, following final design and drawings and a two-year window for construction, the building could be completed as early as 2014. Meanwhile, we are continuing program development for RSA and are pleased to announce eight new, approved courses in the Film Studies curriculum and developing programs in Animation and Illustration. RSA programs initially will be housed on the Riverside City College campus, and we look forward to the transition to the downtown site. While the current economic downturn made it impossible for the Legislature to place a statewide education bond on the ballot, the RCCD Board of Trustees is strongly committed to programs and projects like the Riverside School for the Arts. Our planning, work, and partnerships continue in anticipation of the next statewide education bond.

The RSA building will be a three-story 88,862 GSF facility with 59,267 assignable square feet on the site of the parking lot on University Avenue behind the Riverside Community College District’s System Office, adjacent to the recently restored White Park botanical garden. It will be a hub for the production, creation, and recording of media, including film, and the presentation of new arts involving media. Students will be actively engaged in the preparation of collaborative projects with the guidance of distinguished faculty and guest artists.
From the rooftop patio adjoining the third-floor studio space to the inviting lobby and gallery space on the first floor, students will be inspired by their surroundings both inside and outside the building.
Current RSA plans include a seven-day-a-week schedule that will include (1) instructional programs for students, and (2) weekend community arts opportunities for children and families.
